The Return to Traditional Decor

No one saw it coming, but it looks like this trend is here to stay

 

Victoriana is making its way back into home design and we’re here for it. Exuberant furnishings and accessories, luxe fabrics and the return of traditional decor pays homage to the days when nothing matched, but somehow it worked.

Think Downton Abbey – dramatic patterns, ornate millwork, lavish fabrics, and other details associated with the reign of Queen Victoria. Cheeky details reinvented by contemporary designers are void of the more absurd details often parodied from that time, instead they feel fresh and playful.

The renewed popularity is loosely inspired by young-ish Instagram-posting, decor aficionados with a passion for floral chintzes interior and colonial era elements, according to a recent article published in the New York Times. They are united by the same thing – their “abiding love for rich patterns, and a mild to severe case of horror vacui.” The so called “granny-chic” trend is a rebellion against the mid-century modern look that’s ruled interior space for years. People are moving away from more uniform or so called “bland interiors” in lieu of more daring and colorful design, according to one creative director.
